Course Overview
This new five hour course has 16 modules which address the range of topics in contemporary infection control, and makes specific reference to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on everyday infection control measures. The information is current as of March 2021. Each module is designed to trigger discussions within the dental practice environment, and can be used to support in service staff education and training. Provided with the videos are PDF versions of the slides for reference. Each video has detailed learning objectives listed, and these provide the structure within each topic.
Course participants will view each of the MP4 videos. This can be done either in numerical sequence, or in any sequence which they choose. They will then complete a 30 question assessment.
Learning Objectives
- Understand how to apply a risk-based framework to infection prevention and control measures in the setting of a pandemic and its aftermath
- Apply risk-based frameworks to the selection of PPE, the management of environmental services, and the reprocessing of dental instruments
- Appreciate the difference between aerosols and droplets, and their contributions to the spread of infection
- Appreciate the difference between surgical masks and surgical respirators
- Understand the logic behind risk reduction measures in a post pandemic clinical practice setting including preprocedural mouth rinsing
- Understand the various mechanisms by which vaccines against viral disease work
- Appreciate the regulatory framework for disinfectants and the role of TGA approval for products using clinical settings
Presenter/s Biography
Prof Laurie Walsh
BDSc, PhD, DDSc, GCEd, FRACDS, FFOP(RCPA), FIADFE
Professor Laurence Walsh AO is a specialist in special needs dentistry who is based at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
Laurie has been teaching infection control and clinical microbiology for over 25 years at postgraduate level and has been the chief examiner in microbiology for the RACDS for the past 20 years. He has presented invited courses and lectures on infection control across Australia and internationally. Laurie has written over 60 articles on infection control in ADA publications and over 200 articles on clinical microbiology in the dental literature. He serves on two committees of Standards Australia (personal protective equipment; and instrument reprocessing) and in recent years has been an adviser to the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. Laurie has been a member of the ADA Infection Control Committee since 1998.
He has contributed to the development of various infection control protocols, guidelines and checklists and manuals used in Australia.
Debbie Wilson
Debbie joined the Education and Practice Advisory team at ADAQ in 2019 and is the resident expert on all things Infection Control.
With over 30 years experience in the industry, in both public and private sectors , Debbie brings a wealth of knowledge in the practicalities of instrument reprocessing and appreciates the challenges often faced by our Members.
