This course is designed for allied health workers.

Course Overview

Poor oral hygiene and disease can be more prevalent in ageing patients or those with disabilities. This workshop will provide clinicians with the awareness and practical solutions to assess, improve and maintain the oral health needs of patients with special needs. It is an interactive sessions that will involve a multi-disciplinary team attendance and explore ways the dental team can work collaboratively with allied health teams. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Session 1: Special Needs Dentistry, its challenges and Integration of Oral Health into a multi-disciplinary team 

  • To understand the challenges relating to oral disease inpatients with special needs
  • To be aware of preventative treatment options for maintaining oral health in special needs population
  • To be aware of and apply appropriate oral health care strategies for the non-dental team

Session 2: Round table discussion on multi-disciplinary approaches

  • Discussing the difficulties each allied health team have in managing patients with special needs’ oral health care
  • Looking at strategies on developing a multi-disciplinary approach to the provision of oral health care
  • Instructing the allied health team on on oral health care techniques.

Presenter biography 

Dr Lydia See

Since graduating from the University of Western Australia, Lydia quickly discovered her passion laid within three distinct areas: special care dentistry, dental education and community dentistry. As a result, Lydia completed a Master of Geriatric Dentistry at the University of Southern California, Diploma in Special Care Dentistry with The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and became a dental specialist after completing a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Special Needs Dentistry) at the University of Queensland. Her clinical experience spans across diverse settings including public, hospital and private clinical practice. She has actively contributed to tertiary education and research. She also has extensive experience in dental volunteering and working with not-for-profit organisations. Outside of her professional commitments, Lydia enjoys exploring vegetarian culinary delights, music and theatre. 





Dr David Fu

Dr David Fu is a Dental Specialist in Special Needs Dentistry (SND). He graduated from the University of Queensland for both his Bachelor of Dental Science and Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Special Needs Dentistry). He is passionate about helping individuals with special needs achieve their best dental outcomes. Dr David is calm, genuine and caring. His extensive understanding of special needs and complex conditions ensures a successful and lasting professional relationship.
