Conservative Management of the Worn Dentition

Conservative Management of the Worn Dentition
This hands-on course is designed for Dentists.

Course Overview

Restoration of an extensively worn or badly broken-down dentition can be complex, costly and time consuming to implement. Because of its complexity and cost, this treatment is often delayed until it becomes essential. Dentists (and patients!) want to stop the repeat restoration cycle and its ongoing costly restorative burden. So how do we treat the patient with a severely broken-down dentition?

Professor Ian Meyers will be facilitating this hands-on course, providing participants with strategies for conservative management of worn and broken-down dentitions. Through lectures, clinical demonstrations and participation exercises, Professor Meyers will present four steps to restorative success:

  1. Clinical evaluation of patients
    - Review multiple patient cases
    - Risk assessment tools
    - Impact of patient’s health and lifestyle
    - Treatment planning prior to restoration

  2. Oral environment
    - How dry mouth and salivary acidity correlates with severe tooth wear and non-carious tooth surface loss
    - Examination requirements, salivary analysis and remineralisation strategies
    - Stabilisation of the oral environment and risk reduction prior to restoration

  3. New materials and techniques
    - How to evaluate the range of materials and techniques available for cost-effective, conservative management and aesthetics
    - Step by step procedures to allow participants to compare various materials and techniques for direct and semi-direct restorations

  4. Practical experience
    - Simulation exercises covering techniques for the restoration of the worn dentition; including direct restorative techniques, laboratory procedures, direct, semi-direct and indirect adhesive technologies

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Undertake complete and through patient history assessment
  • Apply knowledge of the oral environment to effectively examine a patient and take steps to reduce risks
  • On a case by case basis, evaluate the materials and techniques on offer to tailor the treatment to the patient for the best results
  • Complete multiple types of restoration techniques using different adhesive technologies
