This hands-on course is designed for recent graduates and those with limited oral surgery experience, looking to improve their confidence.

ORAL SURGERY SERIES OVERVIEW

The Oral Surgery series of courses consist of 3 Model based modules and a 2-day Cadaver based module, designed to consolidate undergraduate and early career experience in Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery knowledge and techniques for the General Dental Practitioner.

The Course will provide updated review of important aspects of patient management required to safely carry out Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery procedures in the General Dental Practice Setting.

The Course will provide a review of potential complications which may arise when carrying out Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery procedures in the General Dental Practice Setting to assist attendees in case selection and communication with their patients.

This course is not intended to expand scope of practice.

By providing knowledge review and hands on practical experience the course will assist practitioners in defining their own scope of practice in order to meet their obligations under the Dental Board of Australia’s Registration Standards.   

MODULE 1 OVERVIEW

Attendees will:

  • Review the Dental Board of Australia’s Guidelines for Scope of Practice in relation to Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.
  • Be provided updates on aspects of medical history and patient management relevant to Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.
  • Review dental anatomy relevant to Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.
  • Carry out several practical exercises utilising models focusing on safe use of hand and rotary instruments in carrying out Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.

  • At the completion of this course, participants may be interested in attending Oral Surgery - Module 2, and/or Oral Surgery - Module 3, the next courses in this practical series.

    TOPIC 2 - Consent

    • ADA Assist Presentation achieving valid consent

    TOPIC 3 - Suturing

    • Handling of Suturing Instruments and Knot tying techniques

    TOPIC 4 - Anatomy

    • Review of Dental and Alveolar anatomy for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery

    TOPIC 5 - Instrumentation for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery

    • Review of Instrument design and correct use
    • Safeguards for Instrument use
    • Practical exercise - Application of dental elevators

    TOPIC 6 - Bone Removal for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery

    • Purpose of Bone Removal
    • Planning for Bone Removal
    • Safety Considerations
    • Common Errors
    • Practical exercise - Removal of bone to assist tooth removal

    TOPIC 7 - Abscess Drainage

    • Lateral Approach for Permucosal Drainage of a Dental Abscess
    • Practical Exercise - Lateral Approach for Permucosal Drainage of a Dental Abscess

    TOPIC 8 - Medical Management

    • Assessment and Management of the medically compromised patient for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery in the general practice setting

    TOPIC 9 - Tooth Sectioning for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery & Single and Multi Rooted Teeth

    • Purpose of tooth sectioning
    • Planning of tooth sectioning
    • Safety Considerations
    • Common Errors
    • Practical Exercise - Tooth sectioning to assist tooth removal (single and multi rooted teeth)

    Presenter/s biography

    A/Prof Anthony Lynham
    BMed (Hons) FRACDS(OMS) FRCS Ed.

    Anthony completed his surgical training in Maxillofacial surgery in Queensland. A Fellowship visit to Switzerland enabled him to gain further experience in this fascinating surgical field. Dr Lynhams’ experience includes dento-alveolar surgery, dental implants, wisdom teeth, facial trauma and reconstruction, sleep apnoea surgery, orthognathic surgery, bone grafting and oro-facial pathology. He has a special interest in orbital surgery , trauma surgery and post traumatic facial reconstructive surgery.

    Anthony has returned to practice after serving as a senior government minister. It was here that significant legislative reforms were implemented to lessen the incidence of trauma in our society. He now serves as clinical director at the Jamieson Trauma Institute.


    Dr Gregory Peek
    BDS(Hons), MDSc(OMS)

    Greg completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Sydney, Australia in 1985.

    Following Graduation Greg served as a Dental Officer with the Australian Defence Forces before commencing specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Brisbane Australia in 1989. Greg completed a Masters of Dental Science (OMS) at the University of Queensland and the specialty stream exit examination of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

    On completion of his speciality training Greg was appointed as a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Royal Australian Naval Hospital HMAS Penguin in Sydney and at the Manly District Hospital in Manly' Sydney.

    On completion of service in the Royal Australian Navy Greg returned to Brisbane where he was appointed as Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and the Ipswich General Hospital in Ipswich, Queensland.

    Greg moved to full time private practice in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Brisbane and until recently worked in a large multidisciplinary specialist practice. On retiring from practice Greg recommenced his involvement in undergraduate dental education at the University of Queensland Dental School before accepting a position at the University of Aberdeen in mid 2017.
